Parks helps improve the quality of life for the citizens of Gonzales, maintaining four parks (J. B. Wells Jr. Park, Independence, Tinsley Creek, Kerr Creek, and CCD), four City cemeteries, one swimming pool, nine hole golf course, three town squares (Confederate, Texas Heroes, and Market Squares), and all City building grounds. Other functions include setting-up before and cleaning-up after special events and supporting other departments with special assignments.

Independence Park

Facilities in Independence Park include four covered pavilions, one nine-hole golf course, three little league baseball fields, one basketball court, a four-field softball/baseball quadraplex, one six-court volleyball complex, one 21-site R.V. park, and a 2.35 mile hike and bike trail.

Independence Park offers many activities to a wide range of customer interests. The lower park, called the "Brickyard" area, has a soccer field, a quadraplex softball and baseball fields, a reservable pavilion, picnic sites, hiking and biking trails and excellent fishing along the Guadalupe River.

The upper park has 3 reservable pavilions, 4 restroom areas, basketball courts, volleyball courts, a swimming pool open May thru August, a 9-hole golf course, a show barn and rodeo arena facility.  Also located in the upper park is the Gonzales
Little League facility with three fields for baseball, softball and T-ball as well as a concession stand.

Swimming Pool

The pool will open on Memorial Day Weekend May 24-25 then will open for daily use May 31-August.

Pool hours are 12 pm to 6 pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Wednesday, it will be open from 12 pm to 5 pm. The pool is closed on Monday. All ages. 8 years and below - adult supervision required.

Independence Golf Course

An attractive 22 acre, 9-hole golf course, laden with native pecan trees along the Guadalupe River offers several challenges is open Monday, Noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday thru Sunday, 8:00am - 7:00pm.

Green Fees are $10 per day on weekdays and $12 per day on weekends. Cart rentals are $8 for 9 holes, $15 for 18 holes (plus tax).

Independence RV Park

21 sites (5 pull-through and 16 back-in) with water, electric and sewage hookups. Cost is $17 per night, maximum 14 day stay. Check out time is 2:00pm. After 5:00pm, check in at the golf course club house or pay at the drop box at the RV information station.

There are 3 reservable pavilions by calling City Hall at 830-672-2815, playground, rest room and the golf course is nearby. RV site reservations are made through Community Services at 830-672-3192.

J. B. Wells, Jr. Park

 J. B. Wells Park, located at 2301 CR 197, is a 169 acre park that has a rodeo arena, multi-purpose building (show barn), covered pavilion, two hundred horse stalls, practice arena and a hike and bike trail.  There are 151 full recreational vehicle hook-ups with 100 new ones being built.

Tinsley Creek Park

Facilities in Tinsley Creek Park include the Eggleston House, DAR House, and public playground maintained by the City of Gonzales.  Facilities in Kerr Creek Park currently include five picnic tables and one commemorative pagoda.

Summer Youth Program

The Summer Youth Program is for boys and girls ages first through sixth grad.  Activities include nature walks, arts & crafts, swimming, sports, and lunch.

The Summer Youth Program will get started on June 4th at 8 a.m. at the Lions Pavilion in Independence Park.  Parental consent forms may be brought by the cildren or can be filled out there.  The program runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon, and ends July 6th.

The Parks office is located in the community services building at 1920 St. Joseph Street. If no one is available at this location, the public should contact City Hall where department personnel may be contacted by radio. Offices hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Additionally, a staff member is available 7 a. m. to 11 a.m., Saturdays and Sundays year-round.
